Borussia Dortmund showcased a masterclass of attacking football as they demolished Celtic 7-1 in a thrilling Champions League match on October 1st, 2024. With Celtic struggling to keep up, Dortmund’s relentless pressure and clinical finishing proved too much for Brendan Rodgers' men.
MATCH OVERVIEW
The game kicked off with high intensity from both sides. In the 7th minute, Dortmund was awarded a penalty after a reckless challenge from Celtic’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who brought down Emre Can in the box. Can confidently slotted the ball into the left post, giving Dortmund an early lead. Schmeichel’s attempt to save was in vain, though he did manage to get a hand on the ball.
Just three minutes later, Daizen Maeda equalized for Celtic, capitalizing on a perfect cross from Arne Engels. Maeda's shot found the inside of the right post, sending the Celtic fans into a brief celebration. However, their joy was short-lived, as Karim Adeyemi swiftly restored Dortmund's lead in the 11th minute, slotting a well-placed shot into the left corner after receiving a cheeky pass from Julian Brandt.
A Dortmund Domination in the first half
Dortmund's dominance was clear, and the goals kept coming. In the 29th minute, Adeyemi scored his second of the night with a magnificent strike from outside the box, leaving Schmeichel helpless as the ball sailed into the top left corner. It was 3-1, and Celtic’s defense was crumbling.
A fourth goal arrived soon after in the 40th minute when Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty after Arne Engels fouled in the box. Schmeichel did get a hand to the ball, but it wasn't enough to prevent Dortmund from increasing their lead to 4-1.
Before halftime, Karim Adeyemi added a fifth goal with a simple finish following a rebound, making it 5-1 as the teams headed into the break.
Unstoppable Force In the Second Half
The second half continued much like the first, with Dortmund piling on the pressure. Despite some early changes from Brendan Rodgers, Celtic couldn't turn the tide. In the 66th minute, Serhou Guirassy netted his second of the match, tapping in a low shot into the bottom left corner after a clever layoff from Nico Schlotterbeck. The scoreboard now read 6-1.
Dortmund wasn’t done yet, though. In the 79th minute, Felix Nmecha pounced on a rebound and fired a low shot into the bottom left corner, bringing the final score to a staggering 7-1.
Celtic’s attempts to respond were fruitless, with Adam Idah and Reo Hatate missing their chances to reduce the deficit. Despite their spirited efforts in the closing stages, Celtic’s hopes were dashed as Dortmund saw the game out comfortably.
90th minute of the Game
As the referee, Jose Maria Sanchez blew the final whistle, Dortmund celebrated an emphatic victory. Their offensive prowess was on full display, leaving Celtic reeling from a heavy defeat. With this win, Dortmund sends a clear message to the rest of Europe: they are serious contenders in this year’s Champions League.
Celtic, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly. A defensive collapse of this magnitude raises concerns about their ability to compete at the highest level.
